quiet Well, that goes without saying, now doesn't it? She's not quiet by choice, in fact, she used to be the stereotypical loud, boisterous, popular girl. Then the selective mutisim kicked in. Now she's... well... silent. Where once she used to stand out of the crowd, was active in drama and even cheering, now she sits in the back of the room and observes. Because she is so quiet, a lot of people even forget that she is there. Over the past two years Casey has overheard a lot secrets. She knows a surprising amount about what's going on around the hospital. A lot of people mistake her silence for arrogance. If they don't know that she can't speak, or if they hear her talking to someone else, they assume that she isn't talking to them because she thinks she's better than them. Either that, or they assume she's very, very shy. However, that isn't even a little bit true. If you can get past her inability to speak, she becomes the happiest, most outgoing mute you'll ever meet. It seems to be a contradiction, as most adolescents diagnosed with selective mutism do become shy and disconnected from society. That's why Casey was sent here, because it is such an unusual case of SM. It is, as the name suggests, selective. She can speak to some people quite easily, but she seems to pick those people for completely arbitrary reasons, like a hair color or a turquoise ring. She picks these people because they remind her of her parents, though she isn't aware that that's what allows her to find her voice. Drinking also loosens her lips. She can talk to anyone when she's drunk, but now she avoids alcohol at all costs.
overachiever Casey's first therapist had a theory that she could still speak because she was such an overachiever. She's always felt the need to do her best, and be better than anyone else at everything, but when she became mute it became less about being better than anyone else and more about making up for the fact that she can't speak. She doesn't have much of a social life anymore because of the mutism, and now she spends her time practicing and studying instead. She prefers practicing to studying, of course, she's not a total geek, she definitely perfers creative pursuits to academic. She plays violin, paints, and loves to sit outside in the sun, sketching. She also writes, though she's a lot more secretive about her writing than she is about everything else she does.
violinist If anything good came out of being a mute, it was the violin. Casey began playing when she was only seven years old. She was good, very good actually, but she didn't become excellent until it became her only real form of communication. Now she pours the emotion that she can't vocalize into the music. She's come to the conclusion that this is all she ever wants to do, is play the violin. If she ever gets out of Aspen Springs, of course.
observant Since she was a child, Casey has always noticed more than most people do. Even when she was loud and loved being the center of attention, Casey has also caught on to small details and filed them away, remembering all of them. She has a fantastic memory. Some people feel uncomfortable around her because they know she's noticed everything and that she'll remember it. She'd never dream of using something she knew against someone, but no one else seems to understand that.
vain Even with her severe social disadvantages, Casey has the nerve to be a very vain girl. She cares enough about her appearance to always wake up two or three hours before she needs to, just so she can do her hair, makeup, and pick out a good outfit. If she sleeps in and doesn't have time to get ready properly, she'll actually refuse to leave her room until after she looks good, even if it means missing something important.
emotional Casey lets her emotions rule her life. She makes her decisions based on what her heart says, not what her head says. Bad when trying to talk herself out of buying a dress she doesn't need, but good when she's playing the violin, because she can pour her emotions into it.
well behaved Casey is one of the few patients who can actually be considered well behaved. She always has been, minus her freshman year, when she decided to be the stereotypical high school cheerleader with the drinking and the partying. That being said, if there's something she really, truly cares about, Casey will break the rules to get it if she has to.
spoiled Money was never an issue when Casey was growing up, and when she inherited the money her parents had left her, it became even less of an issue. As such she's very spoiled. She wants what she wants and won't take no for an answer. It's gotten better since she lost her voice, but when she doesn't get her way she still rebels. It's the one thing that's carried over from her life before the hospital.

»APPEARANCE•
Casey puts a lot of effort into her appearance. Without the makeup and without doing her hair and without wearing the high fashion she's used to, Casey is still a fairly pretty girl. Pale, and a little freckly, a fact that she covers up with makeup. She's short, standing at only 5' 3", and weighing in at just over 100 pounds. A little underweight, truth be told, but that has less to do with her dieting to keep her weight down (something she's been known for in the past) and more to do with how disgusting the cafeteria food is. She refuses to chew her fingernails, though she does chew on the inside of her lip quite frequently. Her teeth are very straight, and very white, a trait owed entirely to her dentist. When they first started coming in, they overlapped, she had a horrible overbite, and she spent a lot of time drinking coffee, staining them. Braces, headgear (worn only at night, to save her from shame) and two whitening sessions later, she has a smile that she, personally, likes. Her eyes are a dark shade of green, and set a little too far apart for her liking.
However, Casey refuses to walk outside like that. She uses makeup to accentuate her good features, as well as hide the bad ones, and dresses in the latest fashions. She has for a long time, but it became even more important to her when she lost her ability to speak. Now the only way to draw attention to herself is staying ahead as far as fashion goes and making sure her makeup always looks fabulous. She uses eyeliner and mascara to make her eyes appear larger, eyeshadow in the proper shades to make them brighter. Bright lipstick to bring out her smile, always coordinating with her skin tone. Concealer and foundation to hide her freckles and any pimples that have the guts to show up on her face. She tans, though it isn't very effective.
Her body is one of the few things that Casey doesn't feel needs to be enhanced. She'd never go under the knife and she doesn't do tattoos. She has her ears pierced, but that's it. It's not a fantastic body, obviously she does have her flaws. Her metabolism refuses to let her eat anything she wants. She eats a piece of pizza and she's likely to gain four pounds. Well, perhaps that's an exaggeration, but you understand my point. She spends a lot of her time yo-yo dieting. She loves the food she can't have, and before she came to the hospital, her weight would fluctuate up and down anywhere form 5 to 10 pounds. She never liked track, but she ran it anyway to keep in shape. She was fairly good, I mean, she didn't win any awards or anything, but she has long legs and that helped her to not come in last every meet. Just most of them. She's not a very active girl by choice. Her long legs are accompanied by long arms. Well, long in relation to the rest of her body, though not long compared to most people. It all comes back to being short. Her fingers are long and lean too, though a lot of that comes from working them with the violin. Although long limbs are usually a good trait, on Casey they lend themselves a rather awkward aire. That being said, they allow her to wear the clothing she wants to, something that being short often makes difficult.
Casey very much believes the phrase "when in doubt, overdress." Her adoptive parents spoiled her when she was young, and spoiled her worse after her siblings came along out of guilt. Not to mention at 13 she came into the money her real parents left her. She likes designer clothing, and that's what she wears. She doesn't wear a lot of graphic tees, though if she finds one she really likes she'll wear it. She's more into solid colors, layering, and lots of accessories. Big rings, lots of necklaces, plenty of bracelets, etc. Unfortunately, she was deemed a cutting risk upon being admitted (though she'd never in a million years do such a thing) and has been told not to wear anymore bracelets. Although she wears a lot of fancy clothing and such, when it comes to shoes she prefers converse and sneakers, flip flops, and flats. She does wear heels, but she's not nearly as picky about her shoes as she is about the rest of her outfits.

»PARENTS• Casey's biological parents were named Amanda and Richard. They were some of the kindest people you'd ever meet, and loved their daughter very much. They spoiled her a little bit, but she was young and an only child. Her adoptive parents, Carmen and Tim, started out spoiling Casey too. But then their own kids came along and, as might be expected, they began focusing on them instead.
»SIBLINGS• Casey has no biological siblings, and the siblings she does have are twelve years younger than her. It's quite a gap. She takes good care of her siblings and protects them whenever she can, but as far as getting along with them, she doesn't. She has a sister and a brother and her sister is very fond of pointing out the fact that Casey is not really Carmen and Tim's daughter.
»HISTORY•
Casey remembers being raised by Mr. and Mrs. Porter. They were not her real parents, a fact that wasn't made known to her for a long time. She remembers being a spoiled child, the result of rich parents unable to have children of their own. She grew up in the midwest, surrounded by ranches and cattle farms. Her parents had been born into money, but they maintained a small horse ranch anyway. Casey was taught to ride at a young age and rode whenever she could. She remembers a horse named Blacky, who was named not for the color of his hair, but for the black eye she had gotten from bumping into his head. She remembers frequent visits to New York, mostly for shopping though also to see numerous concerts and plays. She remembers attending high school with all of her closest friends, almost an hour away in the closest town large enough to have a school. She was popular in school, and she did fairly well, managing to escape failing grades with the help of her much smarter and much more dedicated friends. It wasn't that she couldn't handle the work, but Casey threw all of her time and effort into art class and sketching and painting and playing.
Casey does not remember her real parents, Amanda and Richard. She doesn't remember how happy she was with them up until she was six years old. She doesn't remember the house she lived in on the coast of California. She doesn't remember the frequent trips to a small beach house on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, where her father surfed and her mother dived. She doesn't remember how much they cared for her and how much they spoiled her. (She kind of lucked out with the whole being spoiled thing.) She also doesn't consciously remember the night her parents were killed, either. She relives the night in her dreams, but she always assumed it was just that, a dream. Her Mom and Dad were killed by a man that had once loved her mother. He couldn't bring himself to kill Casey. There was nothing special about the crime except that it was abhorrently violent.
All of this was known to Carmen and Tim, but they didn't want to tell her. They didn't want her to have to live with that. But when she turned thirteen they had no choice. It was at that age that she came into the money her parents had left her, including the house in California. Carmen and Tim chose then to tell her about what had happened to her parents. It probably wasn't the best time, but by then they had their own, biological daughter to worry about. They were much less concerned with Casey's psychological wellbeing. They figured she could handle it. She couldn't.
Casey became the rebel she was never meant to be. Her entire life was ripped out underneath her. She had always made fun of the movies where the protagonist finds out their adopted and freak out, wanting to know who they were. She had always said that it was silly, they still knew who they were, just not who their birth parents were. So what? But now she understood, it really does suck to have your roots taken away like that. Not to mention they were more focused on their kid than on her, now. She was used to being spoiled, and now she wasn't the center of their attention. She rebelled the way any teenager in any dramatic movie or book or TV show would rebel. She began drinking, partying, staying out all night, etc. She spent a year that way. Her parent's didn't notice. Halfway through the year their second child was born. Casey faded into the background. She didn't spend time searching for her past. She had read the article. They were killed, she had survived, she had witnessed it all, and that was the end of it.
When she showed up drunk to school her parents were met with an ultimatum. She went to counseling, or she went back into the system. Amanda worried that they would take all three of the kids, and they got her the counseling she needed. Casey went once, making an unkept promise to go to AA meetings. She continued to drink, though she was much more careful not to show up to school drunk ever again. It was during one of her drinking binges that she lost her voice. She got in the car, very much against her friend's advice, and drove to California. It took her a while to get there, and she continued to drink. She was, and is, perhaps the most sober acting drunk in the world. Only once was she pulled over, and only because she was going 78 in a 65 mile an hour zone. She got to the house she had been born in, and found her bedroom. It was obviously her bedroom, it was pink. The furniture had been untouched, though everything was neat and clean, the gardens well looked after. It had been Tim and Carmen's idea to hire a caretaker.
Casey stayed at the house for two weeks. When she left she was sober, had pledged never to drink again (a promise she has only broken twice), and was unable to speak. She went back to Tim and Carmen's house. They had missed her, and worried, but obviously not enough to start a search. Casey had kind of given up at this point. They had their family now, and she wasn't a part of it. She packed up her stuff, left the house, and checked herself into Aspen Springs. It isn't exactly the action most people would take, but Casey was smart enough to realize she needed somewhere away from everything. Shortly after getting her, Casey began overhearing secrets; words whispered in the hallways and behind closed office doors, hints at the experiments being preformed by the doctors. She knew then that she should leave, but she was curious. She had to stay, if only to find out what was going on. She never realized she was a subject of the experiments herself. Because she isn't taking any drugs for her SM and dissociative amnesia, Casey is having the experiments performed on her in her food. Part of the reason it tastes so disgusting to her.
