Porter is a mute with great observation skills. She overheard a lot beginning on her first day here. She has a vague idea what's going on, though, of course, she doesn't know for sure. She knows that something illegal is going on, and that it has to do with the patients. She is unaware that she, herself, is being experimented on, though with the heightened sense of intuition the experiments have granted her, it's only a matter of time before she figures it out. Porter checked herself into the hospital. She realized soon afterward that this was not the best place in the world for anyone, but now she wants to know what's going on, so she's stuck.
Thropp has noticed that Porter seems to be spending a lot of her time observing the staff. Unlike most people, he doesn't forget that Porter is in the room just because she is silent. Rather, he has begun watching her. He knows that she has caught on to something going on in the hospital, though he's sure she doesn't know what it is for sure and that she doesn't have any evidence. However, that doesn't mean he isn't watching her. It's become a game for Thropp, as many things do. He's watching her for when she figures everything out. And, when she does, he'll worry about disposing of her. Until then, he's having fun with it. He's even taken her on as his own, personal patient to watch her better.
Porter has no idea that Thropp has caught on. She's too wrapped up in trying to figure out what's going on. She doesn't realize he's playing with her, tossing out hints to see what she'll catch. Thropp doesn't realize that the experiments are improving her intuition. In fact, he's giving her the same batch that wrecked another patient's immune system on purpose. He didn't stop to think that it might react completely differently with her. He's a businessman, not a scientist. He has also, during their therapy sessions, begun playing with her mind. Her condition is improved and he knows it. She could walk out the doors any time, and he can't let that happen. The best way to do that is to make her think she's still crazy, or even crazier than normal. He's gone so far as to consider spiking her food with hallucinogens. He hasn't. Yet.
