McBride isn't a violent guy, ordinarily. The experiments have brought that out in him. Since he was started on the experimental drugs he's killed three patients. The staff are well aware that this has happened and who is to blame and he knows that they know. He is constantly watched for more violent outbursts. Growing up, McBride was a very gentle guy, and most of the time he still is. The experiments have improved his eyesight, making him capable of seeing in almost pitch black. However, he has also become violent and angry. He's the perfect test subject, which is why he's still here.
Trudoe grew up with McBride. They're sort of elementary school sweethearts. They've loved each other for a long time. When McBride's parents decided to admit him into the hospital, Trudoe went with him. Not that she didn't need to, but her parents weren't pushing her towards the hospital. They were fine with her living at home, but Trudoe didn't want to visit McBride when she could be with him.
Trudoe is the only person who knows that McBride has killed patients other than the staff. The staff can't know that she knows, otherwise she'd be gone. In fact, Thropp has made it very clear to McBride that if anyone finds out what he's done, it will just become another murder that he, eventually, will be blamed for. McBride is very protective of Trudoe when it comes to dealing with the staff, and he won't let them take her away from him. Trudoe doesn't realize the danger she's in.
Not only does McBride have to worry about killing another stranger or worry about the staff getting rid of Trudoe as threatened, he also has to worry about his next violent outburst. He doesn't always kill when these happen, sometimes he just beats someone up, usually severely. He spends every second of his time with Trudoe worrying that she might be next. Trudoe knows he is worried about it, but she isn't. She has been told the same story he was, that the violence is just a side effect of his medication and that it should fade in time. She knows that he isn't the violent guy that he seems. That doesn't stop him from worrying.
